Cashmere is the fine, soft undercoat of cashmere goats, which grow it to survive harsh winters. In Mongolia it is traditionally combed out by hand in spring, when the goats naturally shed. Under United States law, fibre sold as cashmere must average no more than 19 microns in diameter.

Nepali cashmere carries the craftsmanship of the Kathmandu Valley, where Newar artisans have worked timber, bronze, stone and brick for centuries. UNESCO describes that craftsmanship as among the most highly developed in the world. Sobha Exclusive brings that same attention to detail to cashmere.

To find the finest threads. Mongolia is the world's second-largest producer of raw cashmere, and its goats grow long, fine fibre in its cold climate. Dinesh Tuladhar travelled there to source fibre worthy of Nepali craftsmanship.

Hand wash cashmere in cool water with a gentle wool detergent, or have it dry cleaned. Never wring it: press out the water, then dry it flat and away from direct heat. Store it folded rather than hung, and use a cashmere comb to lift any pilling. Cared for this way, cashmere lasts for years.
